Situation & History

Château Reynon, located in Beguey in the Premières Côtes de Bordeaux appellation, was purchased in 1958 by Florence Dubourdieu's father, Jacques David; his daughter and son in law, Denis Dubourdieu, took over the vineyard in 1976. Thanks to their hard work, Château Reynon is today one of the most renown Premières Côtes de Bordeaux estate.

How was it born ?

Cantegril is a 22 ha single block enclosed vineyard situated on the calcareous plateau of Haut-Barsac. It is located on the site of an old fortified castle named after the same that was built in the Middle Ages. It belonged successively to the Duke of Epernon and the Lords of Cantegril, one of whom married a young lady of the Myrat Family and had the present-day Château Myrat built on a part of the Cantegril Estate. A civil court order dated December 24, 1862, confirms that Cantegril was separated from Myrat in 1854.

It was acquired by the Ségur Montagne family and underwent several ownership transfers prior to becoming the property of Charles Rodberg, Belgian Consul in Bordeaux, and then of Emile Raymond.

The Lhermite Mansencal family, Denis Dubourdieu's maternal great grandparents acquired Cantegril in 1924. Although absent from the 1855 official ranking, the Château Cantegril is mentioned among the best Barsac growth in the various publications of “Bordeaux et ses vins classés par ordre de mérite” by Charles Cocks and Edouard Ferret (1874, 1881, 1886, 1893, 1898, 1908, 1922, 1929). In the same family since 1924, Cantegril has been successively run by André Mansencal until 1978, by his son in law Pierre Dubourdieu till 2000 and currently by Denis Dubourdieu.

Soils

Deep gravelly soil layers on clayey subsoil top a perfectly well drained hill. At mid-slope the soils are clayey and calcareous and the rock protrudes in some areas. The soils are sandier at the foot of the slope.

Blending

66 % de Sauvignon, 34 % de Sémillon.

Wine making and ageing

Château Reynon sweet wine is harvested vinified and aged with the same care than the one of Château Doisy-Daëne. The harvest is performed by experienced grape pickers in three to six successive selective pickings in order to collect at the ideal ripening stage, the grapes concentrated by the "noble rot".

During three quarters of a century, oenological progress and sensible traditions have combined to create the characteristics of Reynon's grapes.

With this know-how an astonishingly simplified process has been elaborated. Extracted through slow pressings, the rich and pure must ferments in oak barrels renewed every by half every years.
Ageing then starts with 9 month in oak barrels, in the coolness of the cellars and is regulated by the weekly toping of the barrels and regular rackings.
This is followed by 9 month in stainless steal tank before bottling.

Tasting

Château Reynon Cadillac se caractérise par l'acidité et le fruit du Sauvignon, très important dans l'assemblage.
Il a une couleur jaune-vert, un arôme évoquant le citron, le pamplemousse et l'abricot frais avec des notes minérales et grillées, une saveur onctueuse, fondante marquée par un bel équilibre acide et une impressionnante longueur.

L'APPRECAITION GENERALE D'OZ CLARK « A very particular wine, this Cadillac is produced by enology professor Denis Dubourdieu at his property Ch. Reynon " The wine contains a large percentage of late- harvested Sauvignon Blanc (60 %) as well as Sémillon picked by successive passages through the vineyards (one of the signs of quality sweet wine white wine viticulture at work) and is both fermented and aged in barriques.
